I lost my cell phone a couple of days ago, and the last place I saw it was in the kitchen. I emptied every cabinet and drawer, but to my dismay, the cell phone didn’t surface.

  • Old dog bones that looked more like prehistoric bones.
  • My historical passport, dated 1987, that left me hysterical.
  • The long-lost Orka silicone oven mitt that my husband swore I pitched in the trash.
  • A pair of ancient fake white Chanel sunglasses.

Yes, fake sunglasses. Counterfeit sunglasses.
When I purchased the sham shades, I didn’t knowingly purchase fakes, even though there were many clues.
Caveat Emptor: My first suspicion was the low, low price. The odor emanating from the faux leather case that made me gag was the second clue. The Chinese characters on the return label — 电 车公 å…± æ±½ 车 –should have been a big tip-off. But I was so smitten with my new eyeware, I was blinded to the telltale signs.

Glasses which are designed in a similar style to designer glasses but without attempting to pass the product off as genuine are perfectly legal. Fake glasses are illegal.

Some counterfeit sunglasses are so skillfully crafted, they can be difficult to spot. If you are planning on buying the real McCoy’s, you should be aware of the following subtleties:
  • Poor Workmanship.
  • Chanel glasses are made of high quality materials; fakes are not.
  • You should not be able to see any flaws in genuine Chanel’s.
  • There should not be any missing or misspelled logos. (Tipoff: Made in Chian! Some counterfeiters can’t even spell.)
  • Chanel glasses should have two interlinking C’s on the side.
  • Counterfeiters will sometimes intentionally misspell the logo or use a name similar to the real brand name: “Channel.”
  • Poor packaging.
  • A genuine pair of Chanel’s should come with a case with “Chanel” embossed on it, a box, and tags. Also look for certificate of authenticity.
By the way, the phone still is missing in action.
Would you knowingly buy fake sunglasses?
